Panchakarma Treatment

'Panchakarma', as the name indicates is a method of treatment, which includes five (Paanch) basic procedures (Karma) and it is absolutely a Customised Process @ Arogyam. Our Doctors after detailed diagnosis determines the kind of procedure and the types of medicines to be used. It is not necessary that a patient should undergo all the five procedures of treatment used in Panchakarma, it would differ from individual's requirements. These ayurveda panchakarma treatment and ayurveda panchakarma therapy help cleanse the systems to maintain perfect health. The inconsistency developed and lodged in Dhatus (tissue spaces) due to the vitiation of doshas (humours) gets eliminated by the panchakarma therapy.

The different procedures are

Pretreatment (Purvakarma) Therapeutic Vomiting (Vamana) Purgation Therapy (Virechana)
Medicated Enema (Basti) Nasal Application of Medicines (Nasya) Blood Letting (Rakta Moksha)

Pretreatment (Purva Karma)
Pretreatment Purva KarmaCertain steps are followed before doing Panchakarma called "poorvakarmas" or pre treatment or elimination therapy. This treatment prepares the body for the total elimination of toxic deposit. The two steps in pre-treatment are: Snehana (oleation) and Swedhana (sweating/sudation).

Snehana (oleation Therapy)
Snehana or oleation therapy literally means love or tenderness. The fatty substances used in this therapy are for producing lubrication the internal as Pretreatment Purva Karmawell as external organs. This procedure involves the application of medicated oil on the skin. he medicated oil used @ Arogyam is Santulan Abhyanga Oil which is a special oil processed with a range of herbs having the property to balance the "vaata dosha" in ones body.

Benefits:
The main purpose of massaging the body with oil is for detaching toxins from the deeper tissues and for their subsequent movement back to their origins in the gastro intestinal tract where they are removed through the main purification procedure. This therapy induces restfulness, strength, invigoration and cognition.
Arogyam Health Care'sSwedana (Foementation / Sudation / Sweating)
Swedan or Sweat therapy simply means the use of a heat and humidity to cause the body to perspire freely. It is highly recommended after Oleation or a Marma massage as well as after a few selected therapies as advised by the doctor time to time.

Benefits:
It helps to eliminate toxins from the body trough sweat.

At Arogyam we use a steam cabinet, which permits your head to remain outside and cool while your body absorbs the heat. The fatty tissues get mobilized after swedana. As with all the Panchakarma treatments, the method used for sweat therapy varies depending on your body type. Vata types tend to be dry, so we do a shorter session. Pittas tend to be fiery hot already, so we do the sweat at a lower temperature. Kaphas with their liquid nature can withstand the highest temperatures and longest sessions.

After treatment, a cooling down period permits the gradual return of the body to normal temperature. This is followed by a shower to remove the excreted toxins
Therapeutic Vomiting (Vamana)
In this process excited and vitiated humors are removed from the upper part of the body by way of vomiting. Vomiting is induced with herbal emetic substances for the purpose of eliminating vitiated Kapha and Pitta. Vamana is effective in the treatment of disorders like asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis, indigestion, epilepsy, excessive salivation and diseases in fatty tissue and muscular tissue like haemorrhoids, tumors of fat and muscle.

Methodology: After completing the preliminary procedures of oleation and fomentation patient should take rest. Adequate rest and sleep should be encouraged in the evening prior to the purification procedure and should be given food preparations which include sesame or other oils that aggravate kapha. The patient thus prepared is asked to drink four to eight cups of warm milk, sugar cane juice, licorice tea, or buttermilk within 15 to 30 minutes. The quantity should be given till the patient's stomach is completely full. The patient is then given a proper dose of appropriate emetic herbs or drugs.
Purgation Therapy (Virechana)
Virechana is the cleansing of the pitta and the purification of the blood toxins. Generally, it is administered three days after the Vamana treatment but this may vary. If Vamana therapy is not needed, Virechana can be administered directly after purvakarma. Virechana cleanses the sweat glands, small intestine, colon, kidneys, stomach, liver and spleen. It is also called AntarSnehan (i.e Internal Oleation). It means the oral administration of medicated ghee. The three main ways ghee is used are- for palliation (a medium dose before meals when the patient hungry); for tonification (energy day with dietic substance in low dose); and for; purification (before panchakarma procedure ghee is given in large doses for a period of three to seven days. Stool, tongue and time of hunger should be noted everyday to check whether the optimum oleation has developed or not.

The different types of ghee used are cow's ghee, Pancha Tikta Ghrita (medicated with five bitter herbs), Dadimadi Ghrita (pomegranate extract ghee) etc

Benefits :
These medicated ghees have a property to accumulate the toxins (i.e aam) from all over the body and then excrete it at the end of the treatment with the support of a special purgative medicine. When taking these laxatives, it is important to adhere to restricted diet. Virechana is used for treatment of skin diseases, chronic fever, piles, abdominal tumors, worms, gout, jaundice, gastrointestinal problems, constipation and irritable bowel syndrome.
Medicated Enema /Basti
In this purification process we use medicated oils and decoctions that are introduced into the large intestine through the rectum with the help of an enema pot or a bag specially designed for this purpose. The word "Basti" means the urinary bladder. Medicated enema is universally regarded as the most important procedure in Panchakarma therapy since it removes the excess Vata dosha (humor) from the entire body and it is also known as "Ardhachikitsa" meaning 50% treatment of an ailment can be done with this therapy prcoess.

Medicated enema is mainly of two types :
Niruha Basti
Also called decoction or cleansing enema Niruha is given usually for purification. In decoction enema salt, honey, oil, paste and decoctions of herbs are used. The herbal ingredient in the decoction varies according to the ailments and these medicines get assimilated by the blood capillaries on the outer wall of large intestine. According to the medicines used, these bastis are named differently like Tiktakshir, Vaitaran, Lekhan etc.

Anuvasana or Sneha Basti
This contains only medicated oil 'Anuvasana' means that which remains inside the body for a long time without causing harm. Anuvasana is used for tonification and for reducing Vata. In each disease the ingredients will be different when the patients are treated. The selection, combination, consistency differ, according to the condition and which help enable specific effect of disease. Method of administration.

The physician examines the patient properly and understands the state of aggravated dosha, agni (digestive fire), age, strength, and season and then decides what herbs one must select for the procedure. Before basti oil is applied to the abdomen region and back and then fomentation is given. The patient is then asked to lie down with the head low and in the left lateral position. He is asked to extend his left leg, with the right leg taken near the abdomen by folding it. Then a small amount of oil is applied to the rectum as well as to the nozzle of the basti application. . After this the nozzle is inserted slowly into the rectum and the applicator balloon is squeezed. We have the facility of attached toilets to these therapy rooms which may be used by the patient as & when required by the patient.
Nasya (Nasal Application of Herbal Medicines)
Nasya or Nasal Therapy is instillation of herbal medicine through nose. Initially a gentle massage is given to all the veins of the sinuses as well as the veins connecting the nasal track with ears, eyes and the brain. Different herbs or medicates oils or ghee is introduced into each nostril, one at a time, in certain quantities. You then inhale forcefully through the nostrils to atomize the mixture and distribute it throughout the sinuses. Our olfactory nerve endings in the nasal cavity are exposed. They terminate in the limbic area of the brain which is associated with our emotions. Thus we can bring balance to our emotions and subsequently to our physiology by using nasya techniques.
